The Science of Vertical Printing: How we print on brick, glass, and wood without mess

When people first see our vertical wall printer in action, the reaction is almost always the same: “Is that actually printing directly onto the wall?” The answer is a resounding yes. While it might look like magic, the process is rooted in sophisticated engineering and chemistry. Understanding the science behind vertical printing helps explain why this technology is disrupting the traditional interior design industry across South Africa.

At its core, our technology is an advanced form of Wide-Format Inkjet Printing, but reimagined for a vertical plane. Unlike a desktop printer that feeds paper through rollers, our machine moves along a specialized track system, using high-precision sensors to maintain a consistent distance from the wall—even if the surface is slightly uneven.

1. The Ink Chemistry: UV-Curing Technology

The secret to printing on “difficult” surfaces like glass, metal, or polished wood lies in the ink. We use specialized UV-curable inks. Unlike traditional paints that dry through evaporation (which can take hours and release strong odors), UV inks remain liquid until they are exposed to a specific wavelength of ultraviolet light.

Our printer is equipped with a high-intensity UV lamp located right next to the print head. As the ink droplets hit the surface, the UV light follows immediately, “curing” or hardening the ink in a fraction of a second. This instant polymerization creates a powerful bond with the substrate. This is why we can print on non-porous surfaces like glass or tiles without the ink running or smearing. Once the print head passes, the image is dry to the touch and ready for life.

2. Surface Adaptability: The Role of Laser Sensors

If a print head were to hit a bump, it would damage the machine; if it moved too far away, the image would become blurry.

Our vertical printer solves this with dual ultrasonic and laser sensors. These sensors scan the wall’s topography thousands of times per second. If the machine encounters a protruding brick or a slight curve in the plaster, the print head automatically retracts or extends to maintain the “Sweet Spot” distance. This allows us to maintain 720 to 2880 DPI (dots per inch) resolution, whether we are printing on a smooth office drywall or a rugged stone feature wall.

To achieve a mural that is 3 meters high and 20 meters long without a single visible seam, the machine must move with microscopic precision. We utilize a heavy-duty, leveled rail system that ensures the vertical mast remains perfectly plumb. The horizontal movement is controlled by a stepper motor that moves the carriage in increments thinner than a human hair. This precision is what allows us to recreate complex photographs, fine text, and intricate logos with 100% color accuracy.

Traditional decorating involves buckets, brushes, drop cloths, and chemical thinners. The “science” of our mess-free promise is simple: efficiency.

  • Odorless Environment: Because the UV curing process is nearly instantaneous, there is no “off-gassing.” You don’t have to vacate your home or office for 24 hours to let the fumes clear. You can have a mural printed in your boardroom at 9:00 AM and host a meeting in that same room by 11:00 AM.
  • No Prep Chemicals: In most cases, the wall only needs to be clean and dry. There’s no need for toxic primers or messy adhesives that can damage your building’s air quality.

5. Durability in the South African Climate

The science doesn’t stop once the print is finished. Our inks are formulated to be “UV-stable.” In South Africa, our high UV index often causes wallpaper and cheap vinyl to fade or crack within a year.
